the rose

“The rose and the thorn, and sorrow and gladness are linked together.” -Sa’adi Shirazi   “I once had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: no good in a bed, but fine up against a wall.” – Eleanor Roosevelt     View previous self-portrait post here:  nightly programming About the Artist: Natalie resides in Peoria, Arizona, with her husband, two children, and two dogs. Birdie Lou

This weekend we are celebrating three weeks of life and love with our new family member Birdie Lou Ellen “Snakebite.” This first set of photos below were taken at the Royaile breeder’s house in Tucson, Arizona, the day we brought her home. We had visited previously when the puppies were only about 5 weeks old. During that visit we met their mother, Twitter, and grandmother, Pumpkin. We also met many other adult and adolescent Welshie’s.   The breeders show many […]

Behind the Pixeled Curtain

“Behind the Pixeled Curtain” Whatever your physical appearance, status, or attachments, it seems it is impossible to escape judgement.  Dig deep, learn all you can about yourself and your own opinions.  If you choose to create according to those beliefs, you are already stronger than those on the sidelines judging, and it won’t take long to always hear your voice over theirs.  This is your shield of self-love, that no one can take from you.         About […]

What if I stopped?

What if I stopped? I think about it. Sometimes. What I am… What I see… Might not matter. I’ll lose A game I’m not playing. But I’m pushed By me. By what I am. By what I see. It matters to me… All that is free Is winning.

Late Summer Bloom

Morning asthma. It’s always scary. Even when it’s mild. He wanted to stay home. He could have gone to school. We are trying to find the balance. Safe at home. Safe at school. We let him stay home. He wanted chocolate pancakes. I  made him chocolate pancakes. He loves honey. It’s raw. It’s local. It’s late summer bloom. It might help his allergies. It was a beautiful morning. He was fine. He is fine. He will be fine.     […]

Edge of Thirty-Seven

Upon waking on Tuesday, October 3rd,  I was struck with an intense desire to start writing.  I skipped my daily five mile morning hike and picked up my pen instead.  The day before had been full of heartbreak for many, myself included.  With the horrific mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert and Tom Petty’s passing, I felt uncontrollable sadness.  I  knew I needed to figure out how to channel that sadness into something else that would help me refocus […]

Woodland Mogwai

Deep in the woods of the Coconino National Forest, this child revealed to us a character from within that we had not seen before. He can be described as a “Woodland Mogwai.” The forest brings out many things within ourselves if we let it…and I am so glad to have met “Woodland Mogwai,” he is very special and extremely witty. His sense of humor and clever phrases had me laughing harder in a 48 hour period than I can ever […]

Those who love you, will love all of your dimensions…

When I showed my daughter this photograph, I wasn’t sure what her reaction would be. For a child who is almost smiling, singing, laughing to the degree it’s infectious, this moment tells a different side of her. Something deep, fierce, intense and incredibly strong. I was hoping she would share the pride I felt for her in this self-scenario…this portrait. I wondered if she would see her toughness and embrace it along with all of the other wonderful parts of […]
