Edge of Thirty-Seven

Upon waking on Tuesday, October 3rd,  I was struck with an intense desire to start writing.  I skipped my daily five mile morning hike and picked up my pen instead.  The day before had been full of heartbreak for many, myself included.  With the horrific mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert and Tom Petty’s passing, I felt uncontrollable sadness.  I  knew I needed to figure out how to channel that sadness into something else that would help me refocus […]

Good Morning

Good Morning She awoke, like usual, with her head resting on two pillows.  A side-to-side neck stretch causes her to moan quietly in response to the loud pressure release “pop.”  Her mind fog is thick and she feels a panic within because she’s not sure what day it is.  There is a flicker of hope that it’s Saturday or Sunday morning.  Those days gift her the ability to get out of the haze slowly and avoid the jolting Monday through Friday hustle.  Then the familiar […]

Woodland Mogwai

Deep in the woods of the Coconino National Forest, this child revealed to us a character from within that we had not seen before. He can be described as a “Woodland Mogwai.” The forest brings out many things within ourselves if we let it…and I am so glad to have met “Woodland Mogwai,” he is very special and extremely witty. His sense of humor and clever phrases had me laughing harder in a 48 hour period than I can ever […]

Those who love you, will love all of your dimensions…

When I showed my daughter this photograph, I wasn’t sure what her reaction would be. For a child who is almost smiling, singing, laughing to the degree it’s infectious, this moment tells a different side of her. Something deep, fierce, intense and incredibly strong. I was hoping she would share the pride I felt for her in this self-scenario…this portrait. I wondered if she would see her toughness and embrace it along with all of the other wonderful parts of […]

On the Road: Phoenix, AZ to Lakeside, OH

Every summer we travel to Ohio to visit family.  This year we decided to drive instead of fly for the first time.  It was FUN!  We stopped in Albuquerque, NM;  Cadillac Ranch outside of Amarillo, TX; Tulsa, OK; St. Louis, MO; and Champaign, IL  We only had 3 days to make it in order to arrive to Lakeside, OH in time for the 4th of July parade.  I’m hoping we can drive again next year, and have more time, so […]

Black Sheep

Black Sheep I saw your face through a teary window Said you couldn’t sleep That you fought the day And lost in the rain Talk talk talk to me Hey what’s the matter You were born in the space between A black sheep Awake and cursing the chatter That sound you’ve learned to drown Sometimes and again Still you told me you could hold together Its easy to see, because you know And it makes you laugh Never wanna mind […]

Splashing Around in the Summer Sun

As the summer sun so delightfully aligns with our backyard, it makes for some incredibly gorgeous golden rays of sun while we play around in the pool.  Temperatures are rising steadily here in the Arizona desert as we are approaching a forecast of 118 degrees!  We are beyond grateful to be able to splash around and cool off, which makes it possible to be outside this time of year.  I love watching these kids swim, jump, smile, laugh and splash […]
